Key features of version 1.0.0:
- Live Earth streaming from the ISS on 2 different channels- ISS tracking- NASA TV streaming
Quick facts:
- The International Space Station (ISS) orbits about 250 miles (or 400 km) above the Earth’s surface.
- The ISSs first component was launched into orbit in 1998.
Since November 2000, the Space Station has been continuously occupied by astronauts and cosmonauts, and currently houses 6 crew members.
- The ISS orbits the Earth 15.5 times a day, which means you could see around that many sunrises and sunsets each day!
- Five major space agencies are involved in the ISS: NASA, Roscosmos, CSA, JAXA, ESA
- Several experiments and activities are conducted on the ISS, ranging from plant growth (for vegetables), monitoring of human impact on Earth’s environment, educational activities (collaboration with schools), and even experiments on the spread of fire in space.
- One experiment in particular makes the oort app possible.
The High Definition Earth Viewing system (HDEV) monitors the rate at which the image quality of HD video cameras degrade in the harsh space environment.
- A byproduct of the HDEV experiment is a video stream of Earth live from any of 4 different cameras on the ISS.
The 4 camera brands are Panasonic, Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba (only one is operational at a time).
Thanks to NASA’s HDEV, oort brings you live Earth video streaming straight from the ISS.
The app is completely free, so check out the best view of Earth before sunset!
